Objectives
The overall objective of the RENET project is to improve the dialogue, mutual understanding and co-operation between German, Swedish and Turkish institutions of higher education in the key field of renewable energy – with a focus on waste-to-energy, solar energy and bio-fuels, in order to promote information and technology transfer and hence assist with the implementation of sustainable (energy) policies in both regions.
Considering this, RENET will provide a relevant contribution not only to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on ensuring environmental sustainability and developing global partnerships for development, it is also in line with the strategic objectives of the Lisbon-Gothenburg Strategy of the European Union.
Moreover, it refers to the provisions laid down in the European Council Decision on the Accession Partnership and reflected in the 2007-2023 EU Integrated Environmental Approximation Strategy (UÇES), particularly the short-term priorities renewable sources, energy and energy efficiency as well as the medium-term priority on integration of sustainable development principles into the definition and implementation of sectoral policies.
RENET is in line with fundamental principles of the strategy because it fosters through its activities:
- sustainable development;
- sectoral integration;
- co-operation between the private and the public sector;
- increasing the environmental consciousness, and public participation.
Thanks to the balanced emphasis on innovation and technology transfer on the one hand and awareness-raising and capacity-building on the other hand, the objectives are composed in a way that this project will not only tackle a perceived need for more dialogue, interaction and co-operation between institutions of higher education in the EU and Turkey in the field of renewables, but also foster the strategic partnership between the two regions in such a key area. Furthermore, RENET intends to foster knowledge and capacity for better decision-making in this field.
- enhance the awareness and understanding of academic staff as well as of policy-makers and stakeholders of the political, economical and social frameworks relating renewable energy;
- promote the Information and Technology Transfer for renewable energies;
- increase the capacity of the academic community to participate in Turkish-European co-operation projects, and
- foster the strategic partnership for implementing renewable energies in Turkey and the EU.
The project allows the combination of best available technology information in the field of renewable energy and best practices transfer in higher education and S&T co-operation. With reference to Turkey’s Accession Partnership negotiations, the network approach ensures that multiple stakeholders are involved and that, by means of its mutual awareness raising, dialogue and capacity-building elements, long-term improvements in Turkey will be reached. By unlocking the potential of the two regions, RENET will deliver an added value in terms of contributing to climate protection and sustainable development.
